Why Each Home Needs Stainless Steel Dinner Plates

By Olive Pate

Homemakers are tasked with cleaning and cooking food for their family daily and they need quality utensils that will stand the test of time. Stainless steel dinner plates are the most preferred in India for 300 years for good reason. Aside from being a culture that has mastered handmade steel utensils that are resistant to tarnishing and rust, India prefers it because it gives a polished look and has a strength that can last for decades.

When this kind of steel was first patented and manufactured in the 1900s, many businesses benefitted from it including the arms industry. Fifteen out of 150 stainless alloy of iron grades are the most useful nowadays. In modern times, this bluish-grey alloy of iron that is resistant to tarnishing and rust is widely useful in architecture and transportation--and even the simple household.

Given its durability and appearance, stainless steel sets are relatively cheap compared to other materials used for dinnerware. It is worth every penny. In fact, many restaurants have shifted to using them instead of ceramics. Ceramics as a material is heavy and difficult to clean and buss out. Most of all, once dropped, they cannot be used again in most cases.

Some restaurants will choose to use disposable utensils thinking that it is more economical. This is not so. Steel that is resistant to tarnishing and rust, once old, can be sold as metal in junk shops where they are melted and reused. Stainless alloy of iron is more sustainable than paper or Styrofoam utensils.

Local department stores and online shops carry different sets of utensils made to be resistant to tarnishing and rust. Newly married couples can start with a 12-piece set, which will be adequate for two people's daily use. A slightly bigger household with children will need a 24-piece set with a pitcher included. There are sets with 100 pieces or more. If you have a big family, this is excellent. If not, you can stack them up for big celebrations. You have to consider storage space and remember that stainless utensils are stackable unlike glass that breaks when nested.

One of this steel's best characteristics is that it is safe for children. It won't break when dropped. High quality ones will not dent either. You will know if it is of high quality by looking at the marks. An 18/10 mark is of good quality. It means that there is 18% chrome and 10% nickel in the mixture. Anything lower than that is poor.

Cleaning this material is a breeze. By using only a sponge with a mild detergent, you can scrub it, rinse it, and then let it dry. Avoid lemon-scented detergents because they contain chloride that can damage this bluish-grey alloy of iron. In the dishwasher, they are safe as well. Overcrowding them is not a good option however. Do not put them together with silver because they might chemically react and damage the metal. Also, do not include them in the hot drying cycle.

Stainless steel is the best material to withstand daily use in any household due to its durability and utility. It is best for moms because not only it is easy to clean, but it is safe around children as well. When guests arrive, the flatware is quite presentable and can match and blend with china for any occasion.
