Geo targeting your website using Google Webmaster Central

I found this video super informative as I'm planning to move to different parts of the world to make websites. This is essential seo information for geo targetting websites.

Geo targetting will only affect the search result if the searcher is not using Googles default search function "search the entire web", but if the searcher is searching in Google within its own geo region.

The essence of geo targetting basically is that you shouldn't geo target your website if you want to reach all speakers of the language in which your site is written.

Geo targeting is usefull if you want to limit the geographical area you want to be found in. For example if you have a shop and only people from within your reagion would be interested in buying. But on the other hand if you also have an internet shop and ship to different countries, then geo targeting will make your site less visible countries you don't target for.

Other examples where geo targeting your website could be usefull is if you want to move to another country and want to prepare your site to be found in that particularly country.

Many other reasons are thinkable. Please share your ideas in the comments.

How to geo target your website in Google Webmaster Central?

1. Click on your site in the dashboard.
2. Click on "site configuration" and "preferences"
3. Select the desired option from the 'Geographic targeting' option.
