Philippine Maid-Why the Global Philippine Maid is Considered the Philippines' Source of Treasure

By Alice Sy

The Philippine maid population abroad today is estimated to comprise almost 9% of the country's overall population. This means, Filipino women are one, if not the top, of the world's popular choice for a helping hand. They may be indispensable to foreign countries but they are still rooted to their homeland because despite working abroad and helping their families at home, they are a major source of funds for the Philippine economy as well.

Almost all nations have Filipino workers. A maid job is not that popular back in the Philippines nor is it favored in other countries unlike nursing and pharmacy. It takes a lot of hard work and skills to become a household helper, not to mention leaving a family behind to serve others. The odd news is there are many Filipino workers abroad who seem destined for a maid job.

It is through the Philippine maid and her family that the Philippine economy enjoys financial benefits. When a Filipino worker sends money thru bank, a percentage goes to the Philippine investment. The added remittances are overwhelming that the government declares the Filipino overseas workers also as investors.

Aside from sending money via bank transfers, they can also contribute to the economy by buying properties or engaging in businesses. Their remittances last year surpassed a billion, which makes the Philippines among the top 5 countries with the largest recipient of remittances abroad, but in terms of remittance from workers, the Philippines tops the list.

The Philippine maid can indeed be a servant to employers, their own family and own country as well just by working hard. It does not matter if they leave their own country for the sake of a higher salary. The negative images are overpowered by the great benefits they bring to their family, the entire world and even the Philippine economy. They are not helpers, they are life changing uplifters.
